| Frequently Asked Questions | ||||||||||||||
| What criteria can a district use to identify students for Vmath participation? | ||||||||||||||
Districts often refer to:
|
||||||||||||||
| What are the Benchmark goal scores for Vmath? | ||||||||||||||
| The established Vmath Benchmark goals are based on the work of math experts (including Dr. Russell Gersten—Direct Instruction) who have reviewed current research on the subject. Benchmark goals are listed in the Teacher's Edition Benchmark and Progress Monitoring booklet, as well as in Vmath training materials. Example: Students in grade 3 who score 35 or less on Benchmark 1 should be enrolled in Vmath. As long-term assessment data is acquired for Vmath intervention, Benchmark goals may change to reflect ongoing research. | ||||||||||||||
| What Vmath Level is appropriate for the grade level I teach? | ||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||
| Is there an entry point chart? | ||||||||||||||
| No. Vmath recommends that students enrolled in Vmath instruction begin at Module 1. | ||||||||||||||
| Is Vmath appropriate for my ELL students (English Language Learners)? | ||||||||||||||
| Effective instruction for ELL and special education students incorporates explicit instruction and active learning; both approaches are integral to Vmath intervention. Additionally, the strong vocabulary component promotes the acquisition of language. | ||||||||||||||
| Does Vmath indicate clearly when Benchmark and Progress Monitoring assessments are to be given? | ||||||||||||||
| Yes. Vmath specifies that Benchmark 1 is to be given before the beginning of Vmath instruction, Benchmark 2 at the midpoint of Vmath instruction (between Modules 5 and 6), and Benchmark 3 at the end of the Vmath implementation. The district often sets the schedule for specific Benchmark periods. Progress Monitoring assessments are given at the midpoint of instruction within each of the modules. The Teacher's Edition Benchmark and Progress Monitoring Assessment booklet and the Assessment Overview (located in the Vmath Training Kit) contain this information. |
