During a Spring Concert event on May 20, 2009, at PS 56 Norwood Heights in Bronx, New York, students did more than just sing. They attended an ice cream social to celebrate their Principal, Priscilla Sheeran, and Assistant Principal, Maureen O'Neill. During the concert, the two administrators were presented with the Voyager Founder's Award for their continued commitment to Voyager Passport™ and for significantly closing the achievement gap.
These two education leaders demonstrate leadership and have consistently helped the school receive praise on Quality Reviews and Progress Reports, for having a "well-planned, integrated curriculum" with "61.8 percent of students making at least one year of progress and 78.3 percent of the lowest one-third of students making at least one year of progress, as measured by the New York State English Language Arts Exam."
"I have worked in NYC schools for the past seven years as a Literacy Specialist and never have I encountered a stronger professional learning community," said Dawn Ulley, Voyager Executive Director, New York City and presenter of the award. "Many of PS 56's students enter Kindergarten not knowing their letters. However, this issue is tackled quickly through the hard work of the entire staff, as well as through their commitment to Voyager Passport."
PS 56 Norwood Heights is a K-5 elementary school in New York City District 10 that serves approximately 559 students. Nearly 400, K-3 students are enrolled in Voyager Passport. The Founder's Award is given in honor of Voyager co-founder and former vice-chairman Admiral Thomas B. Hayward, U.S. Navy (ret.). Award recipients receive a plaque, as well as a monetary donation for their district or school.
